    We want to make sure that it’s easy for you to get electricity when you pay as you go. Most prepayment meters which use cardboard tokens are old and you can often have problems topping them up. 

    If we change our prices we need to send an engineer to your home to manually change the settings on these prepayment meters. Any delay between his visit and the date of the price change can cause problems.

    How does this affect me?

    If you use a token meter you could be paying older and lower prices, until it‘s adjusted by us. And you’d be expected to pay the new prices from the price change date, not the day that your meter is adjusted. The difference could be added to your meter so that part of what you pay for electricity will go towards this balance. If your meter has not been manually adjusted for a long time, you could also see quite a jump in the price you pay for electricity.

    What are you doing about this?

    To avoid problems in the future, we’re replacing all token meters with modern key meters. These meters are more reliable, easier to use and are updated electronically when prices change.  We’ve already replaced over 100,000 meters across the UK and all energy suppliers are working to do the same. To support this change, you can charge your new key at over 19,000 PayPoint sites across the UK.
