    • When you buy an electric appliance check for the BEAB seal of approval to make sure it has been tested and approved.
    • Keep electrical appliances away from water and don’t touch plugs, switches or appliances with wet hands.
    • Switch off and unplug electrical appliances before cleaning or inspecting them.
    • Check plugs and flexes regularly to make sure they aren’t split or frayed.
    • Look out for damage and loose connections.  If you have any problems get them fixed straight away.
    • Don’t hang anything over convector or fan heaters.
    • If you’ve got an electric blanket make sure you always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.  Don’t use it when it’s damp, folded or creased.
    • Try not to use adaptors and extension leads where possible and don’t plug one adaptor into another.
    • If you fit a plug yourself, make sure you wire it correctly and always use the right size fuse.
    • Use short, undamaged flexes and don’t join two pieces of flex together.
    • If you’re working outside, make sure you use a Residual Current Device (RCD) and don’t use electrical equipment outside if it’s raining.
    • Use a qualified electrician for any repairs or contact our Home Services on 0845 712 5349.*
